With the release of Grand Theft Auto 6 drawing ever closer, it's normal to see people trying to "surf" the hype and get some likes with any kind of information about the new Rockstar Games title, even if it's completely false.

This obsession with new features ended up causing problems for a Reddit user, who believed he had gained early access to the game. Instead, the downloaded file apparently contained a virus that compromised much of his computer's functionality.

“'Your leaks are fake, you don't have an insider.' Oh yeah? Then guess who just got early access to the game,” the user wrote in a post accompanied by an alleged image of the GTA 6 installer. “And no, I'm not going to share this with any of you deniers and haters. So don't even bother asking.”

RelatedGTA VI emails fuel rumors that Rockstar will release more information about the game soon.

The author of the post claimed to have obtained an early copy of the game and decided to show it to the r/GTA6unmoderated community, which gathers around 136,000 weekly visitors. Shortly after, however, the same user appeared on another Reddit forum, this time on r/computerviruses , reporting serious problems with his computer.

“My computer got all messed up after running a file I thought was trustworthy,” the new post read. “I downloaded an installation executable from someone I thought I could trust, went through the installation wizard, and then a command prompt window popped up for a split second. Now my computer is incredibly slow. After restarting, it took over a minute to boot up, which isn’t normal for me. I don’t need a lecture, I need help.”

The user also stated that the Windows key and the search bar stopped working after installing the file. Furthermore, they reported a "strange ghosting effect" on the mouse cursor, which reinforced suspicions of a malware infection.

Despite this, there is still the possibility that the whole story was invented simply to troll Reddit users. On the other hand, the profile used in the post has existed for years and has dozens of comments spread across different communities, with no recent history of such pranks.

But we know how the internet works, and it doesn't forgive people who embarrass themselves online. Comments like "natural selection at work," "that was pure stupidity," "who's going to tell him that the source code isn't available on PC yet?" are just a fraction of what this user is reading in their post.

Another community member joked about the situation: "To be honest, everyone was a silly 13-year-old kid back then, believing it was real. We wanted to believe it, and somehow it ended up seeming true."

If this user were a little more aware of how Rockstar Games operates regarding the release of its games on computers, they would know that their Windows ports usually arrive a year after the console versions. Whether this would be enough to end their naiveté, we don't know. Don't believe everything you see on the internet.
